Meet Mr. Hildreth

Mr. Brian Hildreth is in his first year as the Director of Bands at Marshall High School. He was previously an assistant band director at Churchill High School where he taught for eight years. While at Churchill, Mr. Hildreth was the low brass specialist on staff, Director of Jazz Band II and was in charge of teaching the visual program at Churchill High School. While at Churchill, the band has placed 3rd at the 2000 5A Texas State Marching Band Contest, 4th at the 2002 5A Texas State Marching Band Contest, 5th at the 2004 5A Texas State Marching Band Contest, 3rd at the 2006 Texas State Marching Band Contest, 9th at the 1999 Bands of America Grand National Championships and 10th and the 2002 and 2006 Bands of America Grand National Championships. 

Mr. Hildreth comes to San Antonio from Rockford, IL. Mr. Hildreth received his Bachelor of Music Education (vocal music) from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. Mr. Hildreth is finishing his Masters of Education degree in the area of School Administration from Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA. 

Mr. Hildreth has been involved with Drum and Bugle Corps for over 25 years. He began marching in drum corps at the age of 13. He was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 1980-1988 were the corps has been a consistent finalist in the elite top 12 of the activity. In 1989, he began his teaching career with the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps from Hutchinson, KS. In 1990 he returned back to the Phantom Regiment family and was the Brass Caption Head and Program Coordinator for the Phantom Regiment Cadets. He has been on the visual staff for the Phantom Regiment from 1991-94, 1996-2000 and in 2004. In 1996, the Phantom Regiment were Co-champions for the DCI Summer Music Games Finals. He has was the Visual Designer for the 2000 Phantom Regiment. In 2001-2003 he worked with the Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle from Columbus, OH. While there, corps placed 4th in Division II at the 2001 DCI Summer Music Games, 2nd place in Division II at the 2002 DCI Summer Music Games and also place 17th in Division I, and 18th in 2003. Mr. Hildreth was the Visual Caption Head for the 2005 Bluecoats. Where they placed 5th in the 2005 DCI Summer Music Games World Championships in Foxboro, MA.

 

Mr. Hildreth began his public school teaching career as an Elementary Music Specialist and the Director of Bands at Rockford East High School in the Rockford Public School. He moved to Edinburg, Texas in 1994 were he was an assistant band director at Edinburg North High School and Memorial Middle School. While in Edinburg, he was the visual coordinator along with Mr. Sloan for the Edinburg North Marching Band. He taught in Edinburg for five years before coming to Churchill. 

Mr. Hildreth is active as a clinician, judge and visual design for bands in Texas. He was the Visual Designer 2004 CorpsVets Senior drum and bugle Corps from Atlanta, GA who placed 10th in the 2004 DCA Championship finals.  

 

Meet Mr. Summerour

Kent Summerour is beginning his first year teaching in NISD at John Marshall High School. 

Mr. Summerour's love of music began at Haltom High School under the direction of Greg Hull, David Bertman, and Cindy Lansford where he played flute and piccolo and was a state musician.  After deciding to major in music, Mr. Summerour was accepted to Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) under the direction of Howard Hudiberg, John Stansberry, and James Hudson.  While at TSU, Mr. Summerour arranged music for flute choir and played in the orchestra, concert bands, and marching band resulting in numerous out of the country performances. 

Mr. Summerour was a marching assistant for the Cypress Falls Marching Band in the 2000 and 2001 Seasons and also taught master classes on flute.  The Cypress Falls Band qualified for the Texas State Marching Contest in 2000 and placed 7th at the Bands of America San Antonio Regional.

Mr. Summerour Student taught at Ronald Reagan High School in the Fall of 2001.  While at Reagan High School, Mr. Summerour taught the 3rd and 4th concert bands, marching fundamentals, and assisted in show design.  The Ronald Reagan band placed 2nd at the Bands of America San Antonio and Arlington Regionals and 1st at the BOA Houston Regional.

In 2002, Mr. Summeour taught at Pearland High School where he designed show concepts and drill for the 2002 show "Mutations", taught the marching band, and instructed the Concert Band.  The Pearland Band qualified for the Texas State Marching Contest and Mr. Summerour's Concert Band received straight division 1's.

In 2003-2004 Mr. Summerour began teaching at Economedes High School in Edinburg.  While at Economedes, the marching band received new uniforms, their first division 1 rating from a judge, and numerous division 1 ratings at solo and ensemble.  Mr. Summerour also started a Winterguard program at Economedes where he designed the show concepts, drill, flags, and assisted with choreography as well.  The "Affinity Guard" performed at TECA State Championships in 2003 and 2004.

Mr. Summerour moved to Houston in 2005 to teach at Barbers Hill Middle School.  In 2006 Mr. Summerour was promoted to Head Director.  While at Barbers Hill, the number of students qualifying for the region band increased from 2 members to 11 members and the number of division 1's at solo and ensemble increased from 41% to 80% in 2006.  Mr. Summerour implemented an after school sectional program for the first time in BHISD and is also very proud that 65 of the 70 eighth graders have decided to continue their pursuit of music in high school.

Mr. Summerour's music career also extends into professional musicianship as well.  Mr. Summerour is live keyboard/synthesizer player for the band Cesium 137 (Metropolis Records).  In the summer of 2006, Cesium 137 completed a national tour from west to east coast.  Cesium 137 also headlined a music festival in New York during Spring Break of 2007.  Mr. Summerour also plays locally with other bands and is at work on his own music to be released in the near future.

 

Meet Mr. Tabb 

Mr. Kevin Tabb, our new Assistant Director, is coming to Marshall High School from Sam Houston High School, where he was the Head Director for the 2006-2007 school year. Prior to coming to Texas, Mr. Tabb had a successful career in Mississippi and Tennessee. 

Graduating from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor’s of Music and a Master’s in Teaching, Mr. Tabb took his first Assistant Director position in Tupelo, MS at Tupelo Middle School in 1996. In addition to his middle school directing, he also acted as the Drumline Instructor for Tupelo High School and assisted with the ninth grade concert band.  

The following year, Mr. Tabb moved to Houston High School, in Germantown, TN as the Assistant Director. He continued his drumline instructing there as he also directed the concert band and taught general music classes. The Houston High School Drumline took first place in the American Classic Music Festival here in San Antonio in 2000! That same year, the Indoor Drumline made their second consecutive finish as WGI World Class Finalists.

 In 2003, Mr. Tabb was offered the Head Director job at Pontotoc High School in Pontotoc, MS. His first year there, the Indoor Drumline took first place at the University of Memphis Colorfest, the South Panola Indoor Competition, and the Tupelo Marching Invitational! That year the guard also placed first in the Tupelo Marching Invitational, where the Marching band was named the Grand Champion. The next year, the drumline made a repeat first place finish at the same competition. In 2005, Mr. Tabb returned to San Antonio’s American Classic Music festival with his new band. They received all Superior ratings for their concert band. Throughout his time in Pontotoc, the band consistently scored Excellent and Superior ratings at State Band Festival in concert, sight-reading, and marching.

 In June of 2006, Mr. Tabb moved to San Antonio to marry his wife. This is when he took over the Head Director position at Sam Houston High School.

 Mr. Tabb also has a history in drum and bugle corps. In 1989, he marched with the Dubuque Colts, where he returned as a Percussion Tech from 1992-1997. In 1997, he was their Percussion Caption Head.

 In 1990 and 1991, Mr. Tabb marched with the Madison Scouts. He acted as the Percussion Caption Head and Program Coordinator for both Capital Regiment (1999-2001) and Memphis Sound (2003-2005). In each of these positions, Mr. Tabb was awarded Staff Member of the Year. Additionally, in 2004 and 2005, he was the Percussion Arranger for the Lake Erie Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps.

Adding to his repertoire, Mr. Tabb has a vast background in Music Arrangement and Show Design. He is also called upon as a Percussion Arranger, Clinician, and Consultant.

Rey Meza

Rey Meza

Rey Meza was the fourth Director of Bands at John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas. He has taught in grades five to twelve during the past thirty-seven years in Texas public schools. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Southwestern University and a Master of Education from Southwest Texas State University.

He has been associated with two band programs that have earned many honors throughout the past thirty-seven years, including thirty-seven UIL Sweepstakes Awards, nineteen State Marching Band Contest appearances including six State Championships and seven finalist standings. In addition, two TMEA Honor Bands, several "Best in Class" Awards at National Concert Festivals, and a Governor approved selected State of Texas Representative for the "American Musical Salute" in conjunction with the White House Bi-Centennial Celebration. The John Marshall Ram Band has performed in many venues including ABC's TV - Dick Clark's Sea World All Star Celebration Production, ESPN NFL Vikings football game, Alamo Bowl, the NBA World Champions San Antonio Spurs, WNBA Silver Stars, CHL Rampage hockey team, Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom "Main Street Parade", and San Antonio's Battle of Flowers Band Festival as a "featured band".

Mr. Meza is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout Texas and Southwest United States. He is Past President of the International Bandmasters Fraternity Phi Beta Mu Alpha Chapter, Past TMEA Region 18 and 11 Chairman, and has served on UIL committees including the Sight-reading and Prescribed Music List Committees. In addition to currently being the UIL Music Executive Secretary of Region 11, he is proudly serving the band directors of Texas as the President of The Texas Bandmaster's Association Board of Directors.
